The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (VASCI) (http://www.vasci.umass.edu/) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications to fill a non-tenure-track (Lecturer) position at the level of Director of a new Bachelors of Science - Veterinary Technology degree that will complement our nationally ranked Bachelors of Science - Pre-Veterinary Science and Bachelors of Science - Animal Science degree programs. Anticipated start date 2019.
The Director, who will be a veterinarian, will help launch an innovative program that incorporates comprehensive information in the basic sciences and clinical methods complemented with hands-on experience in large and small animals, research animal models, and experience in veterinary practice management.
The appointment will be in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences in Amherst, MA (http://www.vasci.umass.edu/). The Department has a strong commitment to Veterinary and Biomedical Research and to Veterinary and Animal Science undergraduate and graduate education. It is housed in modern research facilities, has an interactive faculty with strengths in immunology, reproduction and development, and environmental toxicology, has excellent core facilities, and is well-integrated into the University of Massachusetts life sciences research community. There are University owned farms with working-herds of sheep, goats, cattle and horses available for teaching and research. The Newton campus has a state-of-the-art building dedicated exclusively to the Veterinary Technology program that includes, among other facilities, lecture and clinical classrooms, surgical suites and animal housing rooms.
Hiring the faculty of the program, evaluating their performance, and developing a creative curriculum to fulfill the requirements of the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technology Education and Activities (AVMA CVTEA).
Prepare and submit accreditation materials and file all necessary reports and self-study materials.
Assist in developing a program that takes full advantage of the UMass Amherst campus, the College of Natural Sciences and the Veterinary and Animal Sciences department, in conjunction with the clinical facilities and access to diverse internships in veterinary clinics, research laboratories, Biotech companies, and shelters at the Newton, MA location.
Develop a new curriculum and teaching two of the introductory courses at the Amherst campus. This is a 12-month appointment and development of summer courses at both campuses and Continuing Education courses is expected.
Travel regularly from Amherst to Newton to provide continuity to the program and ensure student success.
Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
Organization and management skills.
Teaching experience in the veterinary field.
Strong commitment to the advancement of the veterinary technician profession.
Ability to travel regularly from Amherst to Newton.
5+ years of clinical experience in both small and large animals, and teaching experience at a Veterinary and/or Veterinary Technology school and/or at a four-year college in Animal Sciences
