Internal Medicine Fellowship
Hagyard Equine Medical Institute
A Fellowship in equine internal medicine is offered at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute from June 2020 to June 2021. The program involves working at the McGee Medicine Center under the direct supervision of 6 ACVIM Board-certified internists and a month rotation through the Field Care, Sport Horse, Surgery and Theriogenology departments. The Fellowship provides an unparalleled learning experience in a clinical setting that has an annual caseload of more than 2,500 patients. The Fellowship represents an exceptional learning opportunity for those who wish to focus on the various challenges of equine internal medicine and gain exposure and experience applicable to many future practice opportunities. The objectives of the fellowship are to allow the participant the opportunity to gain knowledge on ultrasonography, critical patient care, fluid therapy, antimicrobial therapy and endoscopic procedures all under the direct supervision of an Internist. The Fellow will be expected to share in day-to-day patient evaluation and care and to be responsible for daily elective and emergency duties under the guidance and supervision of a Board-certified internist at the McGee Medicine Center. Typical cases that Fellows will learn to manage include neonatal foals, broodmares with post-foaling complications (such as hemorrhaging shock and uterine lacerations), high risk pregnancies, and horses with pneumonia, gastrointestinal disorders, renal and hepatic disorders, and neurologic diseases (including acute trauma).
