Reports to: Medical Director and Director of Parvovirus Treatment Center
Registered Veterinary Technician for Gigi’s veterinary medical and surgical department, Parvovirus Treatment Center, and Center for Behavior. Provides support to veterinarians to ensure high quality of veterinary services for animals in the care of Gigi’s.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for assisting with surgery, dentistry, preventative medical care, and diagnostics for resident animals, as well as Veterinary Services Partners.
Conduct assessments of overall animal health in consideration of transferring to adoption center partner for
Monitor and report changes or concerns in animal health or behavior to veterinarians, Director of Training and Behavior Modification and/or Animal Care Manager, as necessary.
Responsible for providing treatments, monitoring, husbandry, and diagnostics in the Parvo Treatment Center.
Clean, sanitize and disinfect animal living environments as necessary in accordance to Gigi’s biosecurity protocols, follow proper safety protocols for people and animals, and set a high standard for quality animal handling.
Administer vaccinations and treatments for healthy, sick, and injured animals in accordance with veterinarian’s orders.
Participate in the process of euthanasia including candidate selection, as necessary.
Actively support staff and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission. Represent Gigi’s in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
Provide quality service to partner shelters, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contribution to the success of our organization.
Assist with pharmaceutical inventory management, monitoring, ordering, and control as necessary. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned by veterinarians
Assist with the foster program as needed, including but not limited to assisting with triage calls when scheduled on call.
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Excellent animal care and handling skills. Committed to maintaining a high standard of care for animals and supporting the mission of Gigi’s. Able to exercise good judgment when dealing with the public and staff and when dealing with confidential information. Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) required. Willingness to learn new technical and professional skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be a Registered Veterinary Technician with demonstrated experience in animal care and handling. Shelter experience preferred, but not required. Familiarity with using PetPoint software a plus. Experience with hospitalized patients, ideally in an emergency or intensive care setting, preferred, but not required. Fear Free certification through the Shelter Program required within one month of hiring.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from partners, volunteers, and fosters.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations such as drug calculations and dilutions. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License and insurable driving record. Must possess a current and valid Ohio Registered Veterinary Technician License.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation. Position includes frequent bending and stretching as well as standing for long periods of time.
Work is performed in a normal veterinary hospital and shelter setting including exposure to hazardous chemicals and potential of exposure to parasites and zoonotic diseases. Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament.
