Mixed Animal (Equine) Internship - 1 year commitment
“Jump Start” your veterinary career right after graduation!
Come join our Awesome Vet Team as an intern and get your “learn on” at Red Star Veterinary Clinic located in East Canton, OH. An excellent hands-on learning experience is being offered for the 1st year veterinarian just coming out of school. Our goal is to equip the intern graduate with the knowledge and confidence needed in a small animal, equine, small ruminant, or mixed animal practice setting.
Our friendly team-oriented mixed animal veterinary practice focuses on integrative medicine where we provide quality veterinary medicine, compassionate care, and old-fashioned customer service. The clinic was newly renovated in 2019 and is well-equipped with digital x-ray, ultrasound, dental equipment, endoscope, gastroscope, shock-wave, in-house CBC and chemistry analyzers, thermography camera, laser therapy, and much more. We have a small town address, are close to the city, and have 40 acres of open grassland behind us.
We are an established practice that is stable and still growing! Presently in our ambulatory and haul-in clinic practice, there are four doctors supported by a friendly and competent staff consisting of Registered Veterinary Technicians, several veterinary assistants, awesome customer service representatives, and organized and supportive clinic managers. Working together to provide excellent preventative health care and medical treatment, the clinic team is professionally qualified, progressive in thinking, and sincerely compassionate to patients, clients, and fellow staff members. It is important for all staff to continually grow both professionally and personally; and of course enjoy “work” as well!
Some of the additional extras our team of doctors enjoy include: weekly doctor case discussions over breakfast; clean & peaceful doctor office space to allow for quiet time to write up charts, review diagnostics, and communicate with clients (the view is great!); a team of multiple top-notch Registered Veterinary Technicians to work alongside; and much more. Many clients are established for years and are a joy to work with (obviously there are exceptions!). We are also community-minded and host many educational opportunities for clients.
The intern will rotate throughout the practice (SA clinic & LA Haul-in Clinic) and ambulatory services so that she/he will be involved in a variety of cases including internal medicine, lameness, reproduction, surgery, emergency medicine, small animal & equine dentistry, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and herbal medicine. The sky is the limit for exposure and experience!
The large animal case load is predominately equine with patients being approximately 70% equine, 25% sheep/goats and 5% camelids/cows. Equine patients are a varied mix of recreational trail horses, Western show and performance horses, English sport horses, and backyard pets with most breeds represented (miniature horses to quarter horses to gypsy vanner to percherons!) The large animal practice is mainly ambulatory but approximately 20% of the patients are seen as haul-in cases. The small animal patients are mostly dogs and cats, with the occasional pocket pet, backyard chicken, turtle, rabbits, snakes, etc. Yes, there is variety and we make sure you are fully equipped and mentored to see many different species. Our team will help you learn!
We understand some days in veterinary medicine can be tough and tiring especially the first few years, but we focus as a team to have a positive attitude and remember that daily we are making a difference in the lives of both people and animals! We believe there is life outside of the vet clinic, and it is imperative to enjoy your hobbies, your own animals, and time with family and friends.
Veterinary Compensation: A competitive intern monthly salary, full health insurance, CE allowance, and we can help secure housing if needed. After the competition of the internship, full time employment may be considered if both parties are interested.
