Looking for an internship that will help you become a great equine veterinarian but also teach you how to enjoy being that great veterinarian? Welcome to 3H Equine Hospital and Mobile Veterinary Services!
We are looking for two interns who want to practice high-quality sports medicine and general practice. This is a hands-on internship where you will be a doctor from day one, but with guidance and mentorship from 5 senior doctors. We want you to finish your year with us as a competent and confident doctor who is ready to go out and love your job.
So that’s a lot of nice talk, but how can we back it up? To start with we have a large and growing client list which provides you with a varied caseload so you can hone both your clinical reasoning and your technical skills. The ambulatory work consists heavily of lameness/sports medicine but we have a strong general practice and multiple doctors who provide integrative therapies including chiropractic, acupuncture, and rehabilitation services. We also have a clinic which allows for management of medical colics, foal-watch, severe lacerations, and other cases that may benefit from hospitalization.
While you will be helping with hospitalized patients as needed you will NOT be a hospital technician and the majority of your day will be spent on the road with a senior doctor. As you gain experience you will start going to appointments on your own with phone back-up (and always the option to have in person back-up when desired!). Likewise you will be seeing after-hours emergencies with a senior doctor until you are comfortable going out alone, but you will always have a doctor assigned to you for back-up after hours. While you are riding with a senior doctor you will be expected to be a doctor yourself, not an assistant. We want YOU to be the one injecting joints, passing tubes, fixing lacerations, and communicating with clients but we will be there to help and guide in whatever way you need.
In addition to clinical cases we do regular rounds and technical skills labs (yes, on live horses), often accompanied by awesome food/drinks, and tailored to what you need or want to learn more about. We also have regularly scheduled meetings to check in and see how things are going and what changes we can make to ensure you continue to learn and grow throughout your time with us.
We strive to make work-life balance a reality and not just a catch-phrase. Because our practice is large and busy we are able to offer our interns a 4 day work week, essentially unheard of in internships, and still get them the experience needed to make the internship worthwhile. We provide you with a work phone that is turned off when you are not working. Most importantly we will help you identify the boundaries YOU need to stay happy and sane and then work with you to develop the skills needed to enforce those boundaries.
Internship should challenge you, but it shouldn’t break you. So come to a practice that can give you the education you want without the burnout you’ve been told to expect.
Externships are not required but are strongly recommended. Off-cycle applicants welcome.
