Licking County Humane Society is a managed intake shelter with an annual intake of approximately 1500 animals.We are a no-kill shelter with an extremely low euthanasia rate (and never done to create space). Our live release rate (adoptions) is 96%
Through our various programming, we touch the lives of 5,000 people and 10,000 animals each year. Our organization provides low-cost wellness services to our community, as well as low-cost spay/neuter services. We operate a pet food pantry and provide the pet food for our local Meals on Wheels Program and our local food pantry. LCHS investigates and enforces Ohio’s cruelty laws, including prosecuting those who violate the laws. Position Summary The Veterinarian (Vet) will lead the organization’s efforts to provide high-quality veterinary care to all animals served by the organization. This position will ensure that animals in LCHS’s care receive preventative medical care, prompt diagnosis and treatment of illness, spay/neuter, and relief from suffering. The Vet will be responsible for overseeing the care of individual animals while maintaining the overall health of the shelter animals. This position will also provide preventative care for all shelter animals as well as animals from the general public through LCHS’s low-cost public services. The Vet supervises and provides the highest quality medical care possible to pets served through LCHS in a humane and professional manner and in accordance with established policies and procedures. She/He will provide oversight and mentorship to a very small medical staff, including 2 veterinarian technicians and 2 assistants. She/He will provide expertise and advice to the Executive Director regarding veterinary medical policies, procedures, and issues as they relate to achievement of organizational goals. This position includes 2-days per week of high volume spay/neuter (approximately 25 animals), Friday wellness clinics and coverage one Saturday every other month for community wellness clinics.
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) from an accredited veterinary college.
Currently licensed in the state of Ohio to practice veterinary medicine or ability to obtain license upon hire.
Qualified and eligible to obtain DEA license.
Preferred experience/training in shelter medicine, herd health, and epidemiology focusing on management of infectious disease outbreaks and preventative veterinary medicine.
We welcome new graduates interested in the field of shelter medicine and willing to learn under the guidance of an experienced Medical Director (10 years experience in both private practice and shelter medicine). An understanding and appreciation for the purpose of shelter medicine.
Valid Driver’s license in good standing.
Maintain and provide proof of a current license to practice veterinary medicine in Ohio. Cost of Veterinary License to be paid by LCHS.
Maintain controlled drug licenses and facility licenses as required. Cost of DEA License to be paid by LCHS.
Maintain professional liability insurance at levels sufficient to meet minimum requirements recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the cost to be paid by the LCHS.
Participate in and provide proof of continuing education requirements. Costs paid by LCHS not to exceed $1,000 annually.
Adhere to applicable state and federal laws governing the practice of veterinary medicine.
Adhere to OSHA compliance policies & procedures.
Participate in special events, off-site clinics and perform other duties as requested.
Maintain strict confidentiality on client, patient and donor information.
The ability to exert moderate but not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting, carrying objects and animals of moderate weight.
The ability to stand to perform surgery for 2-5 hours at a time.
The ability to withstand being regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, live animals, strong odors, cleaning chemicals and a noisy environment.
Knowledge of standards of care in animal shelters, or the willingness to obtain that knowledge.
On-call and available in case of emergency, including some nights, weekends and holidays. May be required to work long or unusual hours during volume census.
Knowledge of county, state, city and federal animal health laws and regulations.

We also provide pet food to all of the pet-owning Meals on Wheels recipients in Licking County.
