The ASPCA Animal Recovery Veterinarian Fellow will receive innovative practical experience focused on providing veterinary care to underserved animals and animal victims of cruelty and neglect. Fellows will receive hands on training, sustainable pay and strong mentorship while being prepared for a career in small animal veterinary sheltering and cruelty prevention.
Fellows will work alongside senior doctors, who will mentor them in case management of animals in a sheltering system while recovering from cruelty and neglect, as well as providing veterinary care to animals at risk. The Fellow will spend time in ASPCA Animal Recovery Center (ARC), Canine Annex and Recovery (CARE), the ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH), and the ASPCA Forensic Veterinary Sciences Department.
Within ARC and CARE, the Fellow will practice treating the unique medical conditions that arise from cruelty and neglect, such as starvation, severe matting injuries, and blunt force trauma, while gaining experience in population management and infectious disease control.
The Fellow will work with the Forensic Veterinary Sciences team learning how to recognize and report suspected animal cruelty, perform a clinical forensic examination, explore what community resources are available to prevent cruelty and neglect, learn the legal aspects of forensic reporting, and be able to apply the best practices of forensic report writing and witness testimony.
In AAH, the Fellow will have primary and secondary case management on appointments providing emergency and urgent care for publicly owned animals who are at risk of cruelty and neglect due to limited access to veterinary care.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
ARC/CARE (40%)
Provides high quality individualized care, considering the medical and behavioral needs of our patients while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices.
Perform medical intake exams and initial diagnostics for ARC NYPD and Community Engagement cases
Attend daily rounds and make treatment plans for short and long-term care as well as euthanasia decisions
Foster rechecks as needed
Coordination with partner hospitals and specialists as needed
Provide supervision of the veterinary intern on the ARC rotation
Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and CM protocols.
Provide support and medical services for clients of Community Engagement (CE) and other ASPCA departments as needed including evaluation of animals living in hoarding situations.
Forensic Sciences (40%)
Participate in the intake of all new cases brought by law enforcement
Assist in the live forensic evaluations and forensic necropsies.
Attend the weekly Animal Health and Welfare meeting to review the cases that are being managed by our service with any updates or questions.
Participate in visits to crime scene investigations, animal collecting homes, and criminal trials.
AAH (20%)
Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of outpatients and inpatients, skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of outpatients and hospitalized animals within hospital medical parameters and budgetary guidelines.
Perform general procedures and treatments.
Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.
Practice Fear Free animal handling to minimize fear, anxiety and stress for patients in care
Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and AAH protocols.
While seeing appointments: Fulfill 30-45-minute appointment turnaround time.

Compensation and Benefits:

Qualifications:

1 – 2 years of experience in general small animal practice, emergency medicine, community medicine or shelter medicine preferred, Doctorate: Veterinary Medicine, Must be able to obtain a New York State veterinarian license before July 1, 2023, Only applicants from AVMA accredited veterinary schools will be considered.
