About PetWow:
We’re an independently owned, multi-location, small animal practice located in Northern Kentucky dedicated to strengthening the bond between pets and their people. With over 50 years of excellence in veterinary care, our mission is simple: Making pet care easy. Whether it’s through our hospitals, mobile veterinary services, grooming services, or our culture of mentorship and teamwork, we believe in building a happy, engaged veterinary team that truly makes a difference and loves where they work.
Our Externship Program has been carefully crafted through the input of veterinary students, practicing veterinarians, and new grads across the U.S. We want to offer you a multitude of hands on experience (and we've got the opportunities to make it happen) along with a focus on the importance of patient advocacy, client communication, and business fundamentals.
Our goal is that you leave our externship feeling confident, empowered, and happy! (We think you'll have a blast too- we work hard, but we know how to stay positive and have a great time!)
Here's a glimpse of what each week will look like:
Week 1: Orientation & Technical Skills
Get to know the team during a meet-and-greet hosted by our Externship Coordinator. Shadow in exam rooms to observe patient care, patient advocacy, and client communication. Work alongside our Veterinary Technicians to sharpen skills like venipuncture, IV placement, x-rays, bandaging, history-taking, preventative care and more.
Week 2: Surgical Understanding & Business Fundamentals
Step into the surgical suite to observe and discuss cases with DVMs. Hands-on experience is always encouraged, and available based on comfort level. Learn about anesthesia, intubation, post-op care, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, and the costs tied to surgical procedures. Wrap up the week with a leadership meeting and a session from our CEO covering essential business topics, contract negotiation tips, and basic business skills.
